Shit Happens.. (Live Free)

Considering the overwhelming respect that we NITTians already have for our great college, I’ve decided to take a look at STUDENTS’ CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINARY CODE of NIT Trichy. Do not be alarmed. It’s just a code which nobody has ever followed. It was just a lame attempt to destroy one of the best years of our life.

Let’s take it one at a time :

The objectives of this code say :

“It is necessary that the Institute should cultivate higher values of honesty, integrity, responsibility, mutual respect for persons and property and respect for human rights among its students.”

Of course, it’s all correct. Except the last word should be changed to “PROFESSORS” !! Hello ??
Here’s a nice story to elaborate my point (this is the complete unbiased, uncut and uncensored version of events that took place. Crystal clear in my memory.) :

First semester, I was standing outside my lecture hall building, it was break time. I had a tea in hand, and my cell phone in another. Really don’t remember who’d called at this odd hour. Suddenly I hear a groan and a shout.

F : “Ey buoy. What are you doing? “
Me :  (realizing it’s the ECE prof everyone was talking about. Apparently he hates cell phones. And people. Rather he hates cell phones being used by other people. So thoughtful…)
“One moment sir. ” (Showing him my index finger in our so-Indian style)
Now this guy charged at me like a crazy train, took my phone out of my hand threw it down.
(Me :  (What the !!) , picking up my phone )
F : “Ey buoy. Don’t you know cell phones are not allowed inside campus ?“
Me : “Correction Sir. They’re not allowed inside lecture halls. And I’m outside all the lecture halls right now. “
F : “How dare you speak like that to me ? Follow me…“
What ? I screamed in my head. What the hell did I say to offend this crazy dude. He was carrying a bunch of papers and thrust them into my hands and I followed him anyway. On the way making sure to “accidentally” drop some of the papers  I was holding. Good For Him ! We go into a classroom. I later found out it was Third Year ECE.
F : “Who were  you talking to ?“
Me : “I’m not sure if that’s any of your business sir !“
F : (to class) “See these first years. No respect for anyone. (to me)Which department are you in ?”
Me : “Computer Science“
F : (looks flabbergasted) “Okay then apologize”
Me : “I don’t think I did anything wrong sir. So I’m not going to apologize. Now if you don’t mind I have a class to attend “
F : (fumes) “You.. You… Idiot Dumb Fool “
Me (smiling): “Thank You Sir”
The class saw me smiling and was pretty amused by this time. Some hooted and I’m glad
F : “Get out of the class”
Me (a big wide grin): “Thank You Sir !” (leaving the class and making sure to slam the door as hard as possible behind me )

According to me, this is the biggest victory I’ve had over the highly egoistic teachers that are prevelant all over. Just because they can read out something from a book, I really feel they don’t have to be over-respected as education-givers. In life, YOU are the teacher and YOU are the student.

“It is the responsibility and duty of each and every student to become acquainted with all the provisions of the Code”

Oh really ? More than 75-80% of the students are not even aware that such a code exists. And the other 20 % are rolling with laughter.

–

“To behave and conduct themselves in the Institute Campus, hostels and premises in a dignified and courteous manner and show due respect to the authorities, employees and elders.”

Again. We students are courteous enough for each other. It’s the others (you know who) who need to be taught some values to respect other human beings.

–

“To follow decent and formal dressing manners.”

Decent. Agree.. Formal.. Yeah Right. We’re in college and we’re not 50 years old. So BUZZ OFF..

–

“To foster and maintain a vibrant academic, intellectual, cultural and social atmosphere which is consistent with the objectives of the Institute.”

Nothing will ever be consistent with the objectives of this Institute unless you provide students with basic amenities like clean food and water.

–

“To respect the laws of the country, human rights and to conduct in a responsible and dignified manner at all times.”

Again. For the other people. They really don’t care about any human rights.

–

“To report any violation of this Code to the functionaries under this Code.”

Oh I can assure you.. that’s never going to happen… .

–

“Groupism of any kind that would distort the harmony is not permitted.”

Oh really. The only harmony we have is when we’re back in our hostels, amongst ourselves. So leave us alone.

–

“Students are expected to spend their free time in the Library/Reading Room.”

ROFL !! LMAO !!

“They shall not loiter along the verandahs or crowd in front of the offices or the Campus roads.

Oh yes. We’ll follow the Tata ad now. Forget the already paved roads. We’ll make our own road !

“Students should refrain from sitting on places such as parapets, stairs, footpaths etc.“

Now this is a human right violation. I think I’m entitled to sit anywhere I want to. Nobody can stop me.

“NITT Campus is a “Smoking free and Alcohol free Campus”. Possession or consumption of narcotic drugs, tobacco, alcohol and other intoxicating substances are strictly prohibited in the Campus and Hostels.”

Ignorance is Bliss.

“Silence shall be maintained in the premises of the Institute.”

And NITT has won “The Most Silent Institute in The World Award”. The lecturers now communicate in sign language and the average words spoken per person daily is 2.

–

“Students are not permitted to use mobile phones in the class room, Library, Computer Centre, Examination Halls, etc.”

Now here’s my favorite rule. Coz it supports my story

–

“Students shall not indulge in any undesirable activity and shall maintain highest standard of discipline.”

Yes. It’s all about perception. Our activities are desirable to us. So technically we didn’t break any rule. And our high standards of discipline include shouting hooting fighting etc. ( We’re 20 remember ?? Not 50 !)

“Students shall refrain from all activities considered as ragging which is a criminal offense.“

Oh Don’t get me started on this one.

–

“Students are prohibited from indulging in anti-institutional, anti-national, antisocial, communal, immoral or political expressions and activities within the Campus and hostels.”

I really don’t think that can be avoided. We have a right to judgment on all matters concerning us and our institute, nation and community.

–

“No one shall bring, distribute or circulate unauthorized notices, pamphlets, leaflets etc within the Campus or hostels.”

Uhmm.. No comments..

“The possession, distribution or exhibition of any item by any means which is per se obscene is prohibited within the Campus or on any property owned/ managed by the Institute.”

OMG.. Just plain dumb..

“No one shall exhibit any type of banners, flags, boards etc. inside the campus, gates, buildings or on the compound walls. “

What about the banners put up on our festivals !! Tear those things down RIGHT AWAY !

“No student shall collect money either by request or by coercion from others within the campus
or hostels.”

You’re right. Let the starving kids die. I can’t collect money for them.

“Engaging in gherao, keeping under captivity or illegally confining any official of the Institute is prohibited.”

Already done. And will be done by next year again

“No student shall exert undue influence on fellow students.“

Undue influence is again a matter of perception

“Rash or negligent driving of vehicles in the Institute premises is prohibited.”

The Institute driving school is to blame ! Giving away licenses without actually teaching people. What can I say eh ?

“Students shall only use the waste bins for dispensing waste materials within the Campus including classrooms, hostels, offices, canteen and messes.”

But you know what sounds good ? Just throw it anywhere I want in the hostel. Coz we don’t have bins !

“Any conduct which leads to lowering of the esteem of the Institute is prohibited.”

I just want to conclude by saying that if people don’t try so hard to control other people, then the world would be a much better place to live in. I admit I’m guilty of making jokes about this, but remember we can learn from everything. So let’s take a moment and think about how better life would be if there weren’t so many people to keep a strangehold on us. Right from when we are born : We are imparted values that teachers are greater than god.

For one thing, my belief in God itself is an unstable one. And second thing. When teachers were equated to god. It was a loooooooooongg time ago. When saints imparted worldly knowledge to their disciples. So get over it. Shit happens. Things change. For how long will we keep equating these people to god, who just read out from some book written by someone else. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had some wonderful teachers and I respect them beyond anyone else. But not all of them . The rest are just a bunch of jokers and morons. I’m really sorry to call you people that , but it’s just my opinion.

Children nowadays are sent to interviews for their playschools and what not ! People are just so hell bent on making them THE BEST, that they’re destroying their childhood to an extent that is irreparable. I really feel for the kids of today. They have no freedom whatsoever. They have a schedule for everything ! For Waking Up , Potty, School, Play, Study , TV, Books !!

Since I’ve been a kid, I’ve developed a big hatred for schedules. I agree a general plan is necessary. But I feel life should be so much more spontaneous. And that’s where NITT comes in again. The freedom we have at this place is just unbelievable. Very few other colleges give so much freedom to their students !I pity the people attending the lame private colleges and living like a flock of sheep. That’s one thing I just can’t tolerate. This place has really made me think over all the institutions man has to endure in his life, to become accepted socially, the biggest being religion.

Learn to overthrow “undue influence” exerted upon you. Don’t bend under pressure . Take the moron, attach him to a sling and throw him away as far as possible. These people and things are bad for you.
